Finally, when the American Civil War ended, negotiations began between Russia and the United States over the proposed sale of Alaska. On this day in 1867, the United States and Russia signed an agreement. US Secretary of State William Seward signed the Alaska Trade Agreement with visiting Russian Minister Edward de Stoeckel in Washington.

The treaty was approved by the US Senate on April 9 of the same year. And then US President Andrew Johnson signed the agreement on May 28 of that year. After that, no more time was wasted. In the same year, on October 18, 1867, Alaska was officially ceded to the United States.

Now let's talk about the price. As mentioned earlier, Russia sold Alaska to the US for a nominal price. According to Library of Congress documents, the United States bought 586,412 square miles or about 1,518,800 square kilometers of land in Alaska from Russia. For this they had to pay 72 million dollars. As such, the price of land fell by only 2 cents per acre.
