The US Hawaii-based Tsunami Warning Center said, this (tsunami) threat has passed.

Taiwan was shaken by an earthquake shortly before 8:00 a.m. local time today.
Tsunami warnings were issued for Taiwan, southern Japan and the Philippines immediately after the earthquake. But later it was withdrawn.

AFP correspondents stationed in Pingtung County, north of Taiwan's capital, Taipei, said they felt the strong tremor while sitting there. Aftershocks were also felt in Taipei.

One of the aftershocks felt near Hualien had a magnitude of 6.5, the Taipei Meteorological Agency said.
