Saiful Islam, a farmer from Jugnighat in Munshiganj, the place where potatoes are produced, spoke in much the same tone. Prothom-aloHe said that the production of potatoes was not as good as last time. The farmer expects to grow potatoes on 300 percent of the land and get as many as 400 maunds of potatoes, which will be at least 25 percent less than last year.

Saiful Islam said that farmers were selling potatoes at Tk 25 to Tk 26 per kg yesterday in different markets of Munshiganj.

Farmers say that potato production has decreased due to non-availability of improved varieties of seeds. Along with adverse weather conditions, soil fertility problems and lack of use of technology. On the contrary, production cost is increasing every year. As a result, the potato market is not stable.

Farmer Mir Atikuzzaman of Roar village of Akkelpur upazila of Joypurhat Prothom-aloWho said that last year he got 78 maunds of potatoes in one bigha land but this time he got 70 maunds. He also said that last season, I bought cardinal variety potatoes from the land at 325 taka per maund. This season, I sold the same potato for Tk 740.
