According to the research data, the students did not return after leaving a school due to corona infection. In 2023, 4.5 percent of students in the second grade and 6 percent of the sixth graders dropped out of school in 2023.

According to the research report, the drop is affected by the epidemic. Reasons that have emerged for this are the further decline of low-income families due to the pandemic, increased costs for parents to pay for schooling, prolonged school closures due to the pandemic and lack of proper guidance from schools.

Dropouts were asked if they were interested in returning to school. In response, 57 percent of students at the primary level and 79 percent at the secondary level said they were not interested in returning to school. This study also tries to know what the dropout students do now. 41 percent of primary school-age children and 49 percent of secondary-level children said they were engaged in work or child labor.

More than half of the girls who drop out at primary and secondary levels are victims of child marriage. A small proportion said they were engaged in household work and others said they were doing nothing.

According to the research report, in 2020, there is a trend of shifting to madrasas among primary and secondary school students. The prevalence was significantly higher (6.4 percent) at the primary level than at the secondary level. Children generally study more in mainstream schools. But when parents of madrassa-educated students were asked about their reasons for choosing a madrassa for their child, nearly two-thirds of parents cited religious reasons as the main consideration. One-fifth said madrassas were close to home and that madrassas were open during the pandemic and mainstream schools were closed.
