He left the post of upazila chairman hoping to become a member of parliament. However, fate did not let go. He was defeated in the 12th National Assembly elections. Now he wants to return to the upazila. As a result, some of the chairmen of the resigned upazila parishads will fight in the upazila parishad elections to be held just four months after the parliamentary elections.

According to the law, in order to participate in the parliamentary elections, one has to resign from the post of the local government institution. Chairman of different upazila parishads resigned to participate in the 12th national parliament election held on January 7. According to the Department of Local Government, 50 chairmen resigned.

The upazila parishad chairmen resigned as the ruling party Awami League said to have an alternative candidate in the parliamentary elections and hoped to win easily in the elections without BNP. However, most of the resigned chairmen could not be elected as members of Parliament. Less than one-third of the 50 were elected.

Upazila Parishad elections are going to start four months after the National Assembly elections. Elections in 481 upazila parishads of the country will be held in four phases. The first phase of voting will be held on May 8. The Election Commission (EC) has already announced the election schedule for 152 upazila parishads in the first phase and 161 upazila parishads in the second phase. The second phase of voting will be held on May 21.
