by endroar

Farmers are interested in sunflower cultivation in different areas of Rangamati like Laba Chakma. Many of them are cultivating sunflower instead of harmful tobacco cultivation. Many are farming on abandoned land.

According to the sources of the District Agriculture Extension Directorate office, sunflower cultivation has increased almost five times in the last 3 years. In 2022, cultivation of sunflower started on an experimental basis on eight acres of land in Rangamati. Last year sunflower was cultivated in 68 acres of land. This year in 10 upazilas of Rangamati, 400 acres of sunflower cultivation has been done.

Agriculture officials said the target for sunflower cultivation this year was only 75 acres. But due to the interest of the farmers, the cultivation has increased several times compared to the target. The production target per acre has been fixed at 32 metric tons. As sunflower yield is good and profitable in the district, sunflower cultivation will increase in future.
