In a hadith the Prophet (PBUH) asked the Companions, 'What do you think about a person who takes a bath five times a day?' They did not understand what he was referring to. They replied, that person will be completely clean. He said, this is an example of prayer. That is, virtuous deeds remove sinful deeds.

A hadith is known from Ibn Mas'ud (RA). A man deeply repented and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! I was having fun with a woman. I kissed him. So now apply the punishment of Shariat on me.' Rasulullah (SAW) remained silent. Then a verse was revealed. Surah Hud verse 114 says, 'You shall establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the first part of the night, for good deeds drive away evil deeds. This is an advice for those who accept advice.'
