Noor Mohammad, who was sentenced to death, was arrested after returning from Saudi Arabia

Earlier, on April 13, 2022, the court sentenced four militants of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death in the murder case of Professor Humayun Azad. The four militants who received death sentence are Mizanur Rahman alias Minhaj, Anwarul Alam alias Bhagne Shaheed, Saleheen alias Salahuddin and Noor Mohammad alias Shamim.

Among the four, JMB Shura members Mizanur and Anwarul are in jail. Saleheen and Noor Mohammad were absconding.

On the night of February 27, 2004, Humayun Azad was hacked and left in a bloody state on his way back from Amar Ekushe Book Fair. The next day, his brother Manjur Kabir filed a case of attempted murder in Ramna police station. Professor Humayun Azad died in Germany on August 12 of the same year after recovering somewhat after advanced treatment abroad. The case was then converted into a murder case.

After investigating the case for three years, on January 14, 2007, the police filed a charge sheet against the five accused in the court. The trial of the case started on October 7, 2009 with the framing of charges against the accused.
