The new moon is called 'Hilal' in Arabic. 'Hilal' is the moon of one to three dates. Rasulullah (s.a.w.) said, 'You fast by seeing the moon, break your fast by seeing the moon, break fast or celebrate Eid.' The night in which the moon is visible in the evening is called 'Chandarat'. The ninth month of the Arabic lunar year is Ramadan and the tenth month is Shawwal.

At the end of the fast of Ramadan, the first Shawwal is Eid-ul-Fitr or the Eid of Ramadan. The moon night of Shawwal is the night of Eid. This Eid night is one of the nights in Islam which are for worship and full of virtues. The first Sunnah and Farje Kifaya practice of moon night is to look at the moon at sunset.
