Is the public representative above the law?

by endroar

Comilla's Habibur Rahman can be an example of how power can be exercised by ignoring the law and destroying the environment. He is a member of Darora Union Parishad of Muradnagar Upazila of Comilla.

Pfirst lightAccording to the news, a gang under his leadership from Kaziyatal village is cutting the soil of the agricultural land to supply the brick kiln. The flow of water has been blocked by damming the Khira river to take that soil with tractors. The Khira river flows over the Darora and Dhamghar unions of the upazila. Farmers in several villages of the two unions are dependent on this water for irrigation. The damming of the river has created fears among farmers — whether they will get irrigation water or not.

Once upon a time, passenger and cargo boats used to travel through Khira river. There were fish in the river. But the river is already dying due to pollution and encroachment. Arrangements are being made to put the final nail in the river's coffin by damming and dumping soil.
