Expand sunflower cultivation on the coast

Koira farmer Nirmal Chandra said that even a few years ago the agricultural land was lying fallow. There are now low cost yields. Sunflower production does not require much irrigation. A farmer named Trishna Dhali said that he spent 25,000 rupees in cultivation on two bigha land. He expects to earn 65 thousand rupees. Local agricultural officials are closely involved in this initiative of farmers. They have provided free seeds and fertilizers. They say that sunflower cultivation is very positive to meet the demand of oilseeds.

The World Bank has released a report titled River Salinity and Climate Change Evidence from Coastal Bangladesh. The report says that within two decades, 148 police stations in 19 districts will be affected by excessive salinity. These areas are Shyamnagar, Asashuni and Kaliganj in Satkhira district; Batiaghata, Dakop, Dumuria, Koira, Paikgacha in Khulna; Mongla of Bagerhat district and Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district.
