Derek Underwood, arguably the greatest spinner in England's Test history, has died aged 78. This left-arm spinner, who made his Test debut in 1966, took 297 wickets in 86 Tests. He is the most wicket-taker among Test England spinners.

Underwood's first-class career was spent with county side Kent, whose last test came in 1982. Nicknamed 'Deadly' by his team-mates, the spinner played more than 900 matches for the county team over three seasons (1963-1987) after making his debut for Kent at the age of 17. Underwood took 2523 wickets for Kent at an average of 19.04.

Kent confirmed the news of his death today in a statement on social media 'X', saying, 'Kent Cricket is saddened by the death of one of the club's icons, Derek Underwood, at the age of 78.'
