On March 12, the Bangladeshi ship MV Abdullah with 23 sailors was taken hostage by Somali pirates from the Indian Ocean. The ship was anchored one and a half nautical miles off the coast of Jefal in Somalia's Gadhavjiran district by the pirates.

After the ship was freed, a sailor told family members on WhatsApp that bags full of dollars were thrown overboard from the plane on Saturday afternoon. The bandits took it but remained on the ship. They left the ship late at night mainly to avoid the surveillance of Navy ships and Puntland police.
