Australia hints at recognizing Palestine as a state

Australia has indicated that it recognizes Palestine as a state. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that Australia could recognize the state of Palestine in order to establish peace. However, he also commented that Hamas will not have any role in the government.

Australia's opposition party and the Zionist Federation both say such a move would be ill-advised.

Canberra has been saying for a long time that the recognition of a Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution can only come through mediation with Israel.

However, Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed a speech by UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron earlier this year. Cameron hinted at the time that the UK could recognize a Palestinian state without Israel's support.
