Various statistics say that the number of elderly people in the country is increasing. Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) Sample Vital Registration System 2023 preliminary results say that in 2023, the population over 65 years of age in the country was 6.14 percent of the total population; Which in 2019 was 5.28.

According to the 2022 report of the Bureau of Population and Housing Census, the number of people above 60 years of age in the country is 1 crore 53 lakh 26 thousand. They are 9.28 percent of the total population.

Workers at Baigam say the institution, which works for the welfare of senior citizens, is now on the verge of closure. It will become more difficult to get other services including treatment for the elderly in the country. The organization is conducting various activities for the elderly through 92 branches in the district, upazila and division.

According to the investigation, due to allegations of irregularities, the bulk allocation of 5 crore 3 million taka of the health ministry for Baigam in the financial year 2022-23 has not been released. In the financial year 2023-24, the allocation was reduced to Tk 4 crore, but that too was not exempted. In the last financial year, the Social Welfare Council of the Ministry of Social Welfare allocated Tk 10 lakh. This allocation was not available in the current financial year.
