52 farmers have come together to stop the digging of ponds in Harogathi Beel of Rajshahi’s Puthiya. They have submitted an application to the District Commissioner to stop the digging of ponds in three crop lands. They submitted this application on Thursday afternoon. Earlier on Tuesday, they made the same application to Puthia Upazila Nirbahi Officer.

The farmers are mentioning in their application that they are the common people of Harogathi, Khamarmaria, Bilmaria villages of Puthia upazila. There is a field of three-crop arable land on the eastern side of Harogathi village market. There is also a deep tubewell under Barendra Multipurpose Irrigation Scheme. During the monsoons, water from three bils flows through the Harogathi bil. But the pond is being dug in 30 bigha land in Harogathi bill. Where the pond is being excavated, there are two culverts and a bridge beside it. Even the mouth of the dug pond is connected to the Chandravati canal. If a pond is dug at the mouth of this canal, there will be a barrier to the rainwater of three villages.
